Easyjet Moves Into Icelandic Market: New Luton to Reykjavik Connection Announced
Easyjet to take passengers from London Luton to Reykjavik in 2012
In keeping with Easyjet’s reputation, the air fares come in on a budget. Tickets are available from £32.99 for a one way ticket and £58.81 for a return. The breaks are aimed at those seeking an unusual city break in a previously unexplored location and those intending to fly into Reykjavik for business trips.
2012 is touted as a special year to see the Icelandic aurora borealis. Scientists predict that the winter light display will be active at an intensity not seen for 50 years, with some estimates saying that the lights will be visible in southern areas such as Rome. The event is said to be caused by the Solar Maximum, a period when the magnetic field on the sun’s equator rotates at a slightly faster pace than at the solar poles. October to April is said to be the best time to see the lights.
Iceland can offer a diverse range of activities. The Arctic Open International Golf Tournament is taking place as normal in Akureyri, just south of the Arctic Circle. The tournament boasts a unique midnight tee-off, with a unique opportunity to play in bright arctic daylight. Airport transfers and hospitality are included in many packages.
National Geographic and Lonely Planet are among the respected travel publications placing Iceland near the top of their lists for the 2011-2012 travel season. National Geographic have highlighted the Blue Lagoon landmark in particular, praising it as an “otherworldly vision”. Capital city Reykjavik is expected to continue to draw the crowds given the affordability of the location and its popularity with young travellers. Roughly 566,000 tourists visited Iceland in 2011, with most opting to stay in Reykjavik.
